Audi’s apprentices have done it before with the NSU Prinz 4 and they did it again: They converted an iconic model into an EV. This time it was the A2 which has just turned 25.
Some say Audi “reimagined the A2 as an EV”. Well, that is a bit too much because the company does not intend to take the apprentices’ work any further, for example as a blueprint for a conversion kit to help the A2 fan community convert to electric. It was just an apprentice project and a piece of heritage communications.
For about one year there were about 40 people involved at the German Audi sites in Ingolstadt and Neckarsulm. Next to the trainees there were experts from different departments at Audi. The project included a veritable design update for the A2, in addition to the conversion itself.
The combustion engine was replaced by an electric motor from the Q8 e-tron. For the small A2, however, the power has been throttled down to 165 kW. The maximum torque is 320 Nm. Energy is supplied by a 25 kWh battery from the Audi Q7 PHEV. The battery pack is installed in the trunk and provides a range of up to 200 kilometers. Energy consumption is said to be at 14 kWh per 100 kilometers.
Well, we are no strangers to A2 conversions as one of Johannes’ project shows. See more on his YouTube channel.
