France: Converting iconic classics has just become more convenient

French company R-Fit recently launched conversion kits for the 2CV (“Duck”), the Renault 4L and the Renault R5.

This is good news as it will help keep French iconic cars on the road, especially as the kits come with different buying options.

On the one hand, you can have your vehicle converted and registered at a partner company for a fixed price (from 9,900 Euro). On the other hand, you can also finance the conversion of the vehicle (from 198 Euro a month, 60 installments). Finally, if you don’t own one of the classic models yet, you can buy a converted vehicle (from 35,000 Euro). R-Fit offers a two-year warranty on the kits and installation.

The R-Fit conversion kits keep the original weight distribution and deliver a similar performance as the combustion engine versions. The manual transmission is retained. The battery capacity of 10 kWh allows for a range of 80 to 90 kilometers. Charging is possible at a 220 V socket in around 3.5 hours or – as an option – via a Type 2 connection.

The affordable prices are the result of subsidies by the French state (1,500 to 5,000 Euro) depending on one’s income. On top of that, some French regions support the conversion of existing vehicles, too.

In addition to the driving pleasure of a charming classic, the cars have another advantage: As France is becoming more restrictive in banning ICE cars from inner cities, the converted classics, which are emission-free during operation, are allowed in inner-city environmental zones.
