Modular e-drive unit – off-the-shelf and affordable

GKN Automotive, a 1st tier supplier of drive systems to OEMs, recently announced a plug-and-play modular electric drive unit which could also be of interest to DIY projects.

With a choice of three systems, the first of which could be available as early as 2025, prospective customers can select from a 113 kW 2-in-1 combination system (motor and transmission) and a fully integrated 3-in-1 system comprising an electric machine, transmission and inverter, with 113 kW or 185 kW output.

According to GKN Automotive the concept is targeted towards niche and low volume electric vehicle players, as well as the retro-conversion market. Suitable for small to large cars and light commercial vehicles, the concept aims at accelerating the transition to full electrification by empowering start-ups and low volume players.

The target price for the 2-in-1-system is said to be 5,000 Euro.

The concept was showcased at the SEMA 2023 show, and businesses are encouraged to register their interest via the website here which also provides details on the different systems.
